This Labor Day weekend the party’s in the “bag”. Or ON the bag, that is. Gabriel’s Wine and Spirits and the San Antonio Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse (SACADA) in partnership with the Texas Department of Transportation( TxDOT) are encouraging their customers and the public to “Arrive Alive: Designate a Driver.” The Arrive Alive Campaign purchased 150,000 quart size liquor bags imprinted with its message for distribution at local Gabriel’s outlets beginning Friday, September 4 to remind the public to have a safe Labor Day weekend. The clerks in the stores will also be showing some “flair” with the Arrive Alive message.

Changes in Texas DWI laws |
|
Wednesday, August 05, 2009 |
|
Beginning September 1, 2009 several new laws will go into effect in the state of Texas. Some significant changes in the laws related to impaired driving should serve to increase general deterrence as well as provide additional tools to aid in prosecution of impaired drivers who may have attempted to "beat the system" under the existing laws.
SB328 "Relating to operating a motor vehicle or a watercraft while intoxicated or under the influence of alcohol" was signed into law on 06/19/2009. The most significant changes to the current law will allow officers to obtain blood evidence without a warrant from impaired drivers who are under arrest for:
1. a repeat offense of DWI that is classified as a felony,
2. DWI and have a minor child in their vehicle,
3. causing an accident and bodily injury to another person.

(San Antonio, TX)-- A series of prevention and education initiatives aimed at keeping millions of people safe during the upcoming Fiesta celebration has been unveiled by the San Antonio Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse (SACADA). At a press conference on Main Plaza today, SACADA officials were joined by their Circles of San Antonio Community Coalition members which is comprised of local, county and state organizations, law enforcement authorities and other community partners who want to ensure that Fiesta is a fun and memorable experience.
SACADA’s Executive Director Pam Armstrong says, “We are pleased that the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission (TABC) and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) are collaborating this year to announce their efforts to prevent and deter the abuse and misuse of alcohol and other drugs at Fiesta. More than three million people will be in San Antonio during the eleven-day festival, which runs from April 16th -25th. Many of the 107 events serve alcohol. SACADA and all of our Coalition partners will be proactive with education, training and enforcement efforts. Our goal is to make sure everyone enjoys a safe and responsible Fiesta season.”
Other organizations teaming up with SACADA to implement initiatives for a safe Fiesta are Fiesta San Antonio Commission and the Bexar County DWI Task Force.
