SACADA Reveals Results of Substance Use and Abuse in Bexar County Print E-mail
Thursday, March 04, 2010

San Antonio, Texas (March 2, 2010) - The San Antonio Council on Alcohol
and Drug Abuse (SACADA) and the Circles of San Antonio Community
Coalition (COSA) have recently published the results of their 2009 Needs
Assessment examining alcohol and drug use in Bexar County.  The report
explores several indicators within Bexar County including demographic,
employment, crime rate and student use and is helpful in developing
effective prevention strategies.  These findings and other trends will
be explored in depth at the Texans Standing Tall Regional Forum, March
26, in San Antonio.

"This Needs Assessment is vital in directing our initiatives to those
issues that are most pressing in Bexar County," says Shelah Simmons,
president of COSA.  "It helps us understand how to market our message
and gives us insight into substance use and abuse in our community."

Most notably, results in regards to binge drinking, alcohol-related
motor vehicle fatalities and underage drinking ranked higher than
average in Bexar County.

Binge drinking rates, or consuming five or more alcoholic drinks in one
sitting for men or four for women, were higher in Bexar County among
adults 18 and older than the state and national averages and is steadily
rising.  Additionally, Bexar County ranked 4th in Texas for the number
of motor vehicle fatalities that involved alcohol.

Among secondary and college students alcohol is the substance of choice,
followed by marijuana.  With an average first-age use of alcohol at 12
years old, the majority of secondary students get their alcohol from
friends and family and more than a quarter surveyed say it's "easy" to
obtain marijuana.   College students' consumption could be correlated to
the proximity of campuses and areas with a high density of alcohol
retail establishments.  However, despite what may be commonly assumed,
research states more than 80 per cent of college students surveyed were
opposed to the statement "You cannot make it socially without drinking."
